Typographic Logo Assignment

  • Step #1-You will be sketching 50 designs based on the idea of a Topographic Logo for your graphic design company. This can be as simple as your initials, last name, full name, etc., but should clearly indicate a graphic design company.  Sketches are small records that are drawn, or traced using letters that you have been downloading from dafont.com.  At least 10 of your sketches should be based on collage and transfer methods.Think out of the box or off the line.  You are designing and not writing.  The arrangements should be creative and visually interesting.
  • Step #2-While you designs are being graded, you will learn how to use a variety of tools in Adobe Illustrator.  You will have a series of exercises to complete to give you some practice with the program.
  • Step #3-Next you will select the best of your designs to develop using Adobe IllustratorBased on the exercises we complete in class, you will have the ability to create original letters.  You must use custom drawn and vectorized lettering. Grade preference is on original work!
Thing to think about:

  • Be very careful and artistic about letter spacing, "nesting" letters in to fit shapes, CLONING and inlining around letter forms.

You should convert ALL FONTS to paths (create outlines)!

You need to create a:  1st-Black-On-White version-Master Path
                                    2nd-White-On-Black version
                                    3rd-Spot Color-B & W with one colored spot
4th-TWO COLOR using PANTONE COATED colors only!

  • You will need to create a black shape for the White-On-Black version - that shape needs to be chosen and designed carefully!!!!!

Step #4-Turn in any Illustrator drafts or scanned sketches into the “N” drive!  There will be a folder labeled logos.  You will create a folder with you name.  Inside you will place all the documents that you create for this unit.  Please name your documents as follows:

first.last.black.on.white.logo.ai

This is practice for our later work using Adobe Dreamweaver.
